Marcus Sheridan is the co-owner of River Pools and Spas, a company he pulled back from the brink of financial ruin by overhauling its marketing strategy and focusing on inbound and content marketing. Today he is a passionate public speaker, consultant and online marketer who has authored three books including “Inbound and Content Marketing Made Easy.” Through his latest venture he hosts the Mad Marketing Podcast and helps entrepreneurs change the way they teach and communicate in the business world. He’s also the Founder and President of The Sales Lion.
When you try to sound smart, you end up looking stupid. –Marcus Sheridan
Marcus shared his experiences starting the River Pools and Spas from the ground up and how it parlayed into his current business, The Sales Lion. He expressed how important it was to think of and answer the questions your potential clients have and will have. It’s all about perceptions not principles as the principles will always remain the same. It’s the way people see your content in a different way than has already been presented.
Don’t have a lot of expectations and never be afraid to express your thoughts and ideas. They will eventually find the light and the right audience.
Marcus’s One Idea
River Pools and Spas came from very humble beginnings; starting in the back of a pickup truck right after college. It slowly grew over time until 2008 when the market took a huge hit. He had 16 employees, overdrawn on his account, unable to pay the bills and his employees, and was advised to file for bankruptcy. Instead he started reading about the internet. “If you can hear the questions that your prospects and customers have and truly understand the way that they think and feel and say at their pain points and if you’re willing to talk about these things and address every single one of them individually on your website, you can get way more traffic and eventually more leads and sales.” This philosophy of “They ask, you answer” changed his life and the way he did business. He became a silent partner with River Pools and started a new business “The Sales Lion.”
Marcus started The Sales Lion, not knowing he even wanted another business. He’s now able to speak all over the world and speaks to businesses. He teaches workshops on inbound and content marketing and also teaches agencies how to run these workshops. It started as a blog and it took a year until people started to like what they were reading and asking him to do speaking engagements. You can personally contact Marcus by visiting:

Lessons / Struggles
“One of the biggest holdups I see is that they feel like everything has to be perfect to launch, everything has to be clear, they have to have this beautiful business model, they have to understand technical things like who their marketing personas are…”
The dumbest advice is to hold back in sharing any and all ideas and thoughts.
5 years ago he wasn’t a great writer or able to communicate effectively, but over time he became clearer and more effective. Never give up.
“They ask, you answer” You need to see yourself as a teacher not a business person; have a teacher mentality. Answer all the questions they have. Answer them on the web in blog format.
When you start to produce content, business will be seen as biased in your findings. In reality, what you’re selling may not be what someone really wants. Disarm your prospects by not convincing them that your business is the best for them. Say that your business may or may not be the best company. This will open the doors to great communication.
5 Moves To Start A New Business
He actually doesn’t have many expectations because he doesn’t overanalyze things. “It has nothing to do with what you think and it has everything to do with what the consumer things; what the consumer feels.” Summarizing his thoughts:
- Feel the prompting to go forward with your business idea; don’t ignore it
- Learn as you go
- Follow others in the industry of your business idea
- Identify the problems
