It’s important to build your foundation first, understanding what you’re providing, who you’re providing it to and the medium you’re going to use to provide that. — John Lee Dumas
John Lee Dumas decided to be the first (and only still) to podcast an interview of entrepreneurs’ stories, struggles and accomplishments to encourage and inspire people out there to start, grow and monetize their own podcasting shows.
3 Critical Ingredients for Success
- FREE….you’re going to be able to reach people that are not going to pay for your content because you’re nobody at this point.
- VALUABLE…bringing on successful entrepreneur onto my show, my guests provided the value onto my show.
- CONSISTENCY…an incredibly important ingredient…nothing is more consistent than 7 days a week.
John’s One Idea
At 32 years old, John Lee was listening to inspiring podcast while stuck in traffic and thought, “Man, the next podcast doesn’t go live for my favorite shows for another week. Where’s that 7-day a week podcast?” If I want this other people must want this too. I’m going to be the person who’ll create this. This first (and still only) the 7-day a week podcast that interviews entrepreneurs. 815 episodes later, voted the best in iTunes 2013, consistently raking in anywhere from $250,000 to $300,000 a month in revenue
Lessons / Struggles
“There was really nothing going on with my life…I had a pretty bland life at that point…work was taking up a lot of my life…I wasn’t inspired by it” I was trying to sprint to succeed over and over again. A quote from Robert Einstein… “Try not to become a man of success but rather become a man of value.” “I’ve been doing it wrong this whole time, I’ve never tried to become a man of value.”
I’m going to do a 7-day a week podcast that’s free, that’s consistent, that’s going to be as valuable as I can possibly make it and I’m going to give it away. I’m going to make my audience happy and inspired by this content 7 days a week. Revenue did not start to come in until 9 months into the program.
