You need to be the person who knows the most in your community and that gives people the confidence to say YES! I’m gonna invest with you. – Dorie Clark
The most important thing is to recognize that when you’re in the very early days, you’re not going to have people buying large unless it’s a low priced service offering products. You’re not going to have strangers coming to you. They need to really feel safe with you and get to know you. The folks who are going to hire you are people you know already. It’s about reaching out and letting people in your network know what you’re doing, making sure that as you lay the groundwork, they understand that you’re capable of doing this and that you’re going to do a really good job for them and because you have that history together, they’re going to be the first people who’ll give you the chance.
Consulting vs Coaching
Consulting is generally geared toward organization and solving organizational problems whereas coaching is usually more for individuals.
Dorie’s Formula on How to Figure Pricing
♦ Test out in the market what other people are doing.Whether it’s researching on people’s websites, going to colleagues who have bought similar services and just asking them. These are useful information. If you are going to be pricing vastly differently than the rest of the market, you need to have a good explanation for WHY?
♦ The other one is the concept of value-based pricing. If you work with a client who really understand the value of what you’re helping with, even if you are partially successful in your efforts, you should be paid a lot more than a hundred dollars per hour. And if you could make that case, then it’s a pretty safe bet for them to make this investment, then they’ll be willing to compensate you on a higher rate.
Lessons From the Book: Stand Out
♦ It’s getting harder and harder to breakthrough these days. This is a noisy world. Everybody’s competing for your attention with social media. The problem used to be “How can I have the opportunities to share my ideas?,” that is not a problem anymore. But we have a new problem which is, “How can I get anyone to listen? How can I get noticed from my ideas.”
Dorie interviewed about fifty top thought leaders from different fields and reverse engineer and understand the process they came to be recognized as experts.
5 Moves To Start A New Business
If they were to start another business today, they would concentrate on these areas:
- Ask half a dozen people “if you only have 3 words to be able to describe me, what would they be?” You can learn a lot about yourself that way.
- Start reading intensively about the business to know if it’s right for me and to learn some tips and tricks.
- Go through my Rolodex to see who can be a potential buyer.
- Start creating content to demonstrate what I know about this new field.
- Start an organization, get on the board or have a leadership role.
