It’s not wise to jump into an industry without fully understanding it. – Carlos Michel
Carlos emphasized for entrepreneurs to completely understand the industry they’re going into before completely getting into it. You need to know who your top 5 competitors are in order to fully know how well you’re doing. Study your competitors thoroughly. “When you’re adding content to your website that’s when you really learn what your business model may or may not be.”
Carlos’s One Idea
Carlos had worked with Lockheed Martin for 7 years. In 2001, 2002 he got involved in building websites, marketing, graphic designs, etc. He was introduced to a gentleman who owned a non-emergency transportation company. His bid for the contract wasn’t granted by the company took his ideas and applied it to their magazines. This was his first lesson in protecting your proprietary information. Several years later, the same company called Carlos to have him head the company’s marketing department. He worked there for several years learning how the whole business functioned. From the knowledge he gained he started building his own business before the company went out of business.
The Document Management Service portion of his business is the storing and destroying sensitive information. At this time, cloud services started to surface, which allowed him to offer this service as a more viable proposition to offer. His business model pivoted from labor intensive type of services into the Cloud and the internet. Carlos’ company offers language pairs, translation and interpretation in upwards of 200 languages. They translate websites, documents, voice over work and produce media in about 200 languages. His staff is comprised of people who are native speakers of the language clients are requesting and they are highly educated. They are also credentialed for the specific fields they’re needed in.
