If you can take your insight and knowledge from an existing career or previous career or even a passion, and apply it in a new way, you can differentiate yourself immediately. — Andrew Davis
As an entrepreneur, author and speaker, Andrew shared about how he started as a television producer, became the founder of the Tipping Point Labs ad agency and then a keynote speaker. It all started with a question that was answered by creating great content to market products and services. He shared how focusing on your audience is a very important part of creating your business, whether it’s a side business or a full-time business. He speaks to audiences because he wants to inspire them to change the way they grow and build their businesses. Great content will drive people to your product or services in ways that will increase the demand for your product or services.
Focus on one thing at a time instead of a million and one. Slowly but surely your business will grow and thrive. Find the right audience and streamline your marketing to target them.
Andrew’s One Idea
He started off as a television producer, working for major television networks such as CNN, Fox and NBC and eventually landing his dream job working at the Jim Henson Company. In 1999 the dot.com boom began and he saw a lot of his colleagues, who were also television producers, land jobs as marketers and making a lot more money. He thought “Why are producers good marketers?” He realized that good producers are good markets because they understand that “If you create great content, people will gravitate towards it & consume it. And then when you power that with a product or service you are trying to market…you can increase the demand for the product and services you’re selling by creating the right kind of content.” His “aha” moment came when he was fired from a job he hated, one he was trying to get fired from for six months. From then on he decided he wanted to start his own agency. He and his partner, Jim Cosco, a journalist, started out helping any company market their services by telling great stories. If producers can “create great content. Why don’t brands create great content? There’s no reason why they shouldn’t or can’t. So let’s help them do that.” They built the agency over 12 years and eventually sold it in 2012. Speaking started as a side job due to the success of his book “Brandscaping.”
“I like to inspire people to think and really change their business or change the way they market in fundamental ways.” He travels around the world doing speaking engagements, averaging 320,000 miles in a year. He takes one day a month called a “framework day” to work out one problem businesses have in the market at present and come up with a concept of how to fix it. He would find stories that support the concept and then share them with the world by writing online or being a guest on a podcast which then turned into speaking engagements.

If he could start from scratch again when building his agency, he wouldn’t have started by offering products and services. He would’ve built his audience first by creating a brand that people knew and trusted.
When you find an audience, you should break that audience down into a very specific, valuable set of people to reach out to, which Andrew calls Fractal Marketing.
